o60'S Farewell Dinner

Published Wed 26 May 2021

Good-bye, Farewell and Amen

With jibes about zimmer frames, gophers and MASH comparisons all put aside, Thursday May 6 saw a gathering of over 30 past and recent participants and supporters of WASPs hockey at the over 60s Wake Dinner.

Sadly, the passage of time (and, for several, the tyranny of distance) meant that fielding an over 60s side was not possible for season 2021 and some remarkable careers starting at South Perth Men’s Hockey Club, Old Wesley Collegians Hockey Club, Wesley South Hockey Club and at other clubs around and beyond the state are now continuing in other ways and, for some, in other places.

David Mellor, as he has been for longer than most of us can remember, was the instigator and organiser of a fantastic gathering of reminiscences, camaraderie and acknowledgement of hockey experiences that extend from schoolboy teams to 1As in the 1970s to the variety of social and representative veterans and masters sides of recent years.

To you, David, we dips our lids, for your commitment to the team and the club and for your love of the game. And we all look forward to receiving the email about next year’s reunion!

“The time has come”, the walrus once said … and the walrus has spoken for this cohort of over 60s, who now pass the baton to a younger, fitter, faster and, hopefully, more skilful generation.
