Murray McIntyre Retires

Published Tue 23 Aug 2022

Club legend and men's Premier 1's games and goals record holder Murray McIntyre announced his retirement to the 1's group in early August, with the 13 August game against Wolves his last. Muz has been a fantastic player and huge contributor to the broader Club for many years, providing significant contributions to both WASPs and men's hockey in Western Australia.  Congrats on your very lengthy and successful playing career Muz, and we look forward to continuing to seeing you around the club. Men's 1's Tribute to Muz:

Wow, just wow. The time has come. Just a couple of things to note first before we get into Muz's, Mumbles', Murray’s outstanding and once in a lifetime 1’s career. He debuted in 1992. Many of the current squad members weren’t even born yet. Played 575 games for WASPS Men’s 1st Grade. Won 3 premierships and been in a lot of finals series. To bring some perspective to this, if you averaged 23 games a season, that is 25 years playing first grade. Not to mention all the training sessions & coaching that he has done over his time. An impressive feat. 441 goals (and counting into this weekend) that have crossed the line. He has also played with 160 players who have debuted with him since his career began.

Murray, the striker with a signature upright back stick shot that the competition will always be synonymous with. We knew this time was coming, however now it is here we all start to reflect on the years of hockey that have been played with you. Not only is his illustrious playing career to be awed at, but also what he has brought to the club through the junior ranks. Coaching junior teams, helping out where needed around the club. Muz is generally not too far away to put his hand up, give a smile, have a chat and get on with the problem at hand. You have been a great recipient as a life member to WASPs and a well deserving one Muz.  It has been an amazing time and one that I am sure you will look back on after Saturday and wish you could do it all over again. For a lot of us, we have seen not only you grow, but your lovely family. Cara, Charlie, Harriet & Billy and we thank you all for your support through out the journey for Muz. Always a very important part to a player is the people around them.

From the 1’s group, we do wish you all the best - and I am sure we will continue to see you watching Charlie in the future.
