Jake Whetton - New Premier 1's Women's Coach

Published Tue 25 Jan 2022

We are pleased to announce that the Cub has secured Jake Whetton as our new Women's Premier 1's coach!

As everyone would be aware, Jake is a very experienced and successful Australian representative - having been a key part of the Kookaburra's team for over a decade now - and we are thrilled to have him on board for 2022.

Jake, who moved to Perth in 2011 to pursue his hockey dream with the national team, remains an integral member of the Kookaburra's and between that, coaching and his beautiful young family - he and wife Sam have a 3-yeard old boy, Felix, and a 1-year old daughter, Marlee - will be kept extremely busy.. which he "wouldn't have any other way!"

On accepting the role, Jake has stated that he is looking forward to to the opportunity and challenge:

"I am really excited to work with the girls, who I know - looking in from afar - work extremely hard, enjoy each others company and strive to uphold the group's expectations and high levels of demand.

I am hoping to bring a new and revitalised energy to the role and can’t wait for the season to begin!

I really enjoy giving back to the sport that has given me the opportunity to follow my dreams from a playing perspective, and to offer this from a coaching role is something I am very much looking forward to. I want to challenge myself to assist the girls being the best they can be both on the hockey field as well as off it. I can’t wait to see the growth in the team throughout the season.

I hope I can offer a different perspective on how to play the game. I believe it is one of my strengths within my own playing game, so I am hoping I can translate this to coaching and that the girls can jump on board with the way we can play."

On behalf of the Club, welcome to WASP's Jake.. and we look forward to an enjoyable and successful season!
